Thinking about moving to Queensland as a skilled worker? Good news: Queensland has released its 2026–27 skilled migration program, and the first step is just around the corner. Registrations of Interest (ROIs) open on 6 November 2026.

What is an ROI?
A Registration of Interest (ROI) is how you tell Queensland that you would like to be considered for state nomination. Think of it as raising your hand. It is the first step towards getting nominated by the state.
Three important rules about ROIs
- You need a new ROI every year. This includes people who registered in a previous year and were not nominated. Your old ROI will not carry over.
- One visa, one ROI. Each ROI covers only one visa subclass, and only one ROI can be active at a time.
- No editing after submission. Once you submit your ROI, you cannot change it. If your circumstances change, you must submit a new one.
Tip: Because you cannot edit an ROI, double-check every detail before you click submit.
Key requirements for skilled workers
If you are already living and working in Queensland, the time you must have spent in the state depends on the visa you are aiming for:
| Visa | Residence requirement before submitting your ROI |
| Subclass 190 | Living and working in Queensland for at least 9 of the last 12 months |
| Subclass 491 | Living and working in regional Queensland for at least 6 of the last 9 months |
What counts as eligible work?
Not every job counts. Eligible work must generally meet these conditions:
- It was done after you gained your qualification.
- It involves at least 20 paid hours per week.
- It is in your nominated occupation or a closely related one.
On top of this, you must also meet the occupation, skills assessment, English language and points requirements.
Quick checklist before 6 November
- Decide which visa you are applying for: Subclass 190 or 491.
- Count your months living and working in Queensland.
- Check that your work is paid, at least 20 hours a week, and in your occupation.
- Make sure your skills assessment, English test and points score are ready.
- Prepare your details carefully, since the ROI cannot be edited.
