What is SC407 Training Visa?

The Training Visa (Subclass 407) is a temporary visa that allows skilled workers, graduates, and students to undertake workplace-based occupational training in Australia. It is designed for individuals who want to improve their skills in their current occupation, area of tertiary study, or professional field through structured training programs with an approved Australian organisation. The visa allows holders to live, work, and participate in training activities in Australia for up to 2 years.

The Subclass 407 visa also allows eligible family members to be included in the application or join later as subsequent entrants. The SC407 Training visa involves a simple 5-step process between employer and applicant:

  1. 🧩 Step 1: Before You Apply
    • Ensure your sponsoring organisation is approved as a temporary activities sponsor before applying
    • Your sponsor must submit a nomination application and it must be approved before you apply (Australian Commonwealth Government agencies are exempt from this)
    • If this is a volunteer or unpaid placement, provide your sponsor with a completed Form 1283 Acknowledgement of Unpaid Placement (visa applicant) and Form 1284 Acknowledgement of Unpaid Placement (sponsor) to submit with the nomination
    • Do not arrange travel until you receive written confirmation that your visa has been granted
    • If you plan to get a new passport, do so before applying -if you get a new passport after submitting, notify the Department in writing via ImmiAccount
  2. 🏢 Step 2: Gather Your Documents
    • Provide identity documents -current passport (photo, personal details, issue and expiry dates), national identity card if applicable, and proof of any name changes
    • Provide sponsor documents -sponsor approval letter, nomination approval letter (if sponsor is not an Australian Commonwealth Government agency), and a written statement from the sponsor confirming they will meet sponsorship obligations for you and all dependent family members
    • If sponsored by an Australian Commonwealth Government agency, include a copy of the invitation to participate in the training
    • Provide financial support documents showing your capacity to support yourself and your family -bank statements, letter from financial institution, employment contracts, or documents showing allowances, accommodation and stipends from your sponsor
    • Provide evidence of adequate health insurance for you and all family members for the full duration of your stay in Australia
    • Provide evidence of functional English language skills -not required if you hold a valid passport from the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand, the United States, or the Republic of Ireland
    • For workplace-based training, include a copy of your qualifications and CV, and any required registrations or licences
    • For professional development training, include a statement from your sponsor confirming your participation and relevant skills, a signed letter on company letterhead from your current manager detailing your position and duties, and a copy of your qualifications and CV
    • Provide character documents -Australian Federal Police certificate if you have spent 12 months or more in Australia in the last 10 years since turning 16, and overseas police certificates for every country where you spent 12 months or more in the last 10 years. • For dependants under 18, provide birth certificates or family book, adoption papers if applicable, and parental consent via Form 1229 or a statutory declaration if the other parent is not travelling with the child
    • For dependants over 18, provide identity and character documents, proof of relationship, proof of financial dependency, and a medical report if the dependant is 23 or older and dependent due to physical or cognitive limitations
    • Have all non-English documents translated and scan or photograph all documents clearly
  3. 📢 Step 3: Apply for the Visa
    • Log in or create an ImmiAccount to lodge your visa application online
    • Attach all supporting documents including your sponsor's documents to your application
    • Ensure family members have their application charges paid and documents attached to their individual applications
    • Pay the visa application charge -your application will not be processed until payment is made
  4. 📑 Step 4: After You Apply
    • Check ImmiAccount regularly for any requests for additional information from the Department
    • If you were in Australia when you applied, you will be granted a Bridging Visa A (BVA) -do not cancel your current visa, as the BVA only activates once your current visa expires
    • Note that the BVA does not allow re-entry into Australia -it cancels on departure, so ensure you hold a valid visa if you plan to travel
    • Complete health examinations and provide biometrics if requested by the Department
    • Attach any additional documents requested as soon as possible via ImmiAccount
    • You cannot add family members to your application after lodgement, except for a child born after you apply but before a decision is made -notify the Department immediately with the child's birth certificate and Form 1022 Notification of Changes in Circumstances
    • Family members not included in the original application may apply to join you later as subsequent entrants using the Temporary Work and Activity Visa (Subsequent Entrant) (403, 407, 408) form in ImmiAccount
    • If a mistake is made on your application, complete Form 1023 Notification of Incorrect Answers and upload it to ImmiAccount promptly
    • Notify the Department of any changes to your phone number, address, passport, or relationship status
  5. 🛂 Step 5: Visa Outcome
    • You can be in or outside Australia when the decision is made
    • If the visa is granted, you will receive your visa grant number, visa start date and visa conditions in writing -keep a copy with you while in Australia
    • If the visa is refused, you will be informed of the reason and whether a review of the decision is available
    • Application charges are non-refundable in the event of refusal
