FEDERAL BUDGET 2024/2025- The Leaving Violence Program” (LVP) for Victims of Domestic Violence
In a significant move to combat domestic violence and support victims, the Australian government has announced the extension and expansion of key initiatives aimed at assisting individuals affected by violent intimate partner relationships.
The Leaving Violence Program (LVP), set to commence from mid-2025, will be a pivotal component of the government’s strategy, providing essential financial support, safety assessments, and referrals to support services for victim-survivors leaving violent relationships.
This initiative builds upon the successes and learnings of existing programs, such as the Escaping Violence Payment trial and the Temporary Visa Holders Experiencing Violence Pilot, which will now be extended until 30 June 2025.
Funding for these initiatives will total $925.2 million over five years from 2023–24, with ongoing support of $263.3 million per year. Key components of the funding include:
- $152.3 million over three years to extend and expand the Escaping Violence Payment and Temporary Visa Holders Experiencing Violence Pilot trials, ensuring continued support services beyond the pilot end date for active cases. The Leaving Violence Program will subsequently replace these trials.
- $16.5 million over five years to provide legal assistance specifically for temporary visa holders leaving violent relationships.
- $6.1 million over four years to enhance specialised support for visa holders experiencing domestic and family violence through the Domestic and Family Violence visa support service.
This substantial investment underscores the government’s commitment to addressing domestic violence and ensuring that victims, including temporary visa holders, receive the necessary support and resources to rebuild their lives.
By making the Leaving Violence Program permanent and expanding support services for those impacted by domestic violence, the government aims to provide a lifeline to individuals in vulnerable situations and contribute to a safer and more secure society for all Australians.
