Australia Introduces New Bill to Strengthen Skilled Worker Sponsorship
Exciting news for skilled workers and businesses! The Migration Amendment (Strengthening Sponsorship and Nomination Processes) Bill 2024 has been introduced to improve how skilled professionals enter and work in Australia.
This Bill is designed to make the system more transparent, fair, and effective by introducing important changes:
Key Highlights:
Updated Labour Market Testing
- Employers must now complete labour market testing within six months (instead of four months) before nominating a skilled worker.
Income Thresholds for Skilled Workers
- The Bill will set minimum income thresholds for skilled visas, ensuring workers receive fair pay.
- These thresholds will be updated every year on 1 July, based on changes in average earnings in Australia.
Public Register of Sponsors
- A new public register will list approved sponsors, including their business name, ABN (Australian Business Number), postcode, number of skilled workers sponsored, and their job roles.
Why Is This Important?
These changes aim to ensure Australia continues to attract skilled talent while protecting workers and promoting fair opportunities. Businesses will benefit from a more transparent process, while skilled workers can enjoy greater clarity and fair pay.
When Will It Begin?
The Bill will become law once it receives royal assent or automatically six months and one day later.
The Bill has already passed the House of Representatives. You can follow its progress and find more details on the Australian Parliament House website.
